Going, Going, Gone.

I miss them already. My folks boarded a plane this morning at 6:45 a.m. for the sandy beaches and warm, sunny days of Florida, and I won’t see them again until April. These are my best friends, people. Best. Are kids supposed to have their parents as best friends? I don’t think so. But here we are.

And before y’all roll your eyes collectively, thinking, “at least she still has parents” – believe me, I agree with you. I know how lucky I am to have both of my parents. I know how amazing it is, that I was blessed with my grandparents until I was 45 years old. And yah, I know they’re only gone for a few months, not forever…but still. These are my besties.

Selfishly, I’d love for them to stay. I’d love to have them here at my beck and call. For whatever, and whenever I needed them. But they deserve this. They need this. After 15 weeks in a boot after foot surgery, my mom finally had the boot removed and she can now walk without it. The days of my dad shuttling her to and from my boutique are over. He can resume his life, too.

And it’s a nice life. My dad loves being in the warm sun. He rides a bike, he plays bocce  with his friends. My mom hangs at the pool, shops and goes to the beach. They feel better there. They don’t have to contend with the snow and ice. And they got out just in time. We’re slated for over a foot this weekend.

So yah, I want them to be happy and away from all this cold. I want them to enjoy themselves, because they put their children first, their grandchildren and great-grand children first, their whole life. It’s never been about them. It’s always been about us, and for 3 months out of the entire year, they get to relax and enjoy themselves.

Yes, I will miss the day to day, the driving to their house on my way to the boutique, stopping in to say ‘good morning‘ and hearing one of my dad’s jokes. I’ll miss my folks popping in, dinners and impromptu lunches and shopping with mom. I’ll miss my dad showing up on a Saturday afternoon with lunch, because he knew I’d forgotten to pack one.

These are good people.

But hey, at least there’s Skype & Face Time, right?
